A little girl with autism... can't talk, but her paintings have been sold to collectors for hundreds of dollars.

Iris Grace Halmshaw is autistic and struggles to express herself, but art has changed life for both the little girl and her family. Iris's autism affects her in many ways, from sensory issues with noise and fabrics she comes into contact with, to problems with basic social and tactile interactions with the world around her.

Iris was officially diagnosed as a child with autism, a condition that has made her unable to communicate except through the medium of art. She has a tendency to drift off into her own world, like many autistic children.  When Iris's parents introduced her to painting, they were hoping the activity would be a fun diversion and a way to get their autistic child to express herself.

But as soon as Iris picked up a brush, her parents were blown away by how she approached the painting. She shied away from doing simple paintings of houses or smiling stick figures and, instead, created colorful abstract pieces that appeared to express deep emotion. Her abstracts often depict particular moods or experiences after which they are titled, like Patience, Separation, and Immersion.

Many of Iris' paintings show an astonishingly mature interpretation of natural scenes, including waterfalls, fields and skies. to Professor Allan Snyder from the Centre for the Mind at the Australian National University, people like Iris are able to unlock the hidden wells of potential that lie in all of us, but are rarely accessed.

"I think it's possible for a perfectly normal person to have access to these abilities," he says. "[But] savants can't usually tell us how they do what they do. It just comes to them."

It all depends on your point of view

Everyone sees things from their own point of view. We tend to come to conclusion about what something is, and then we create our reality based on that point of view. 90% of the time, we try to categorize things according to what we already know.

The Cannon Lap experiment affirms that our own Point of View creates our reality. This experiment illustrated that a photograph is shaped more by the point of view of the person behind the camera than by what's in front of it.

Canon Lab invited six photographers to a portrait session with a twist. ‘Decoy’ is one of six experiments from The Lab, designed to shift creative thinking behind the lens. The video, called "The Decoy," runs about three-minutes and is a very eye-opening experience in that it makes us stop and rethink how our points of view create our reality.

Be the catalyst for a different possibility

We can be the catalyst for a different possibility if we are willing to be that. It's a choice we can make. The energy we create with the contribution we are being in our daily life ricochets out in the entire world and it changes the people and everything around us. Every time you are choosing to ‘be the catalyst for change’ you create a wave of possibility.

Be kind, be in allowance and destroy any investment in the outcome or any attachment to a result.

What does the future hold for business?

Have you ever wondered "What will business be like in 5, 10, or even 20 years from now?" How many industries that are unknown today will exist in the future?

What if the future of business has nothing to do with technology, but actually has to do with people who have strategic awareness to see new and different possibilities?

New forces for different possibilities are emerging in the global business arena. The evolving generative business landscape is opening up economically viable businesses  that favour smaller, more creative, more dynamic and more innovative enterprises—creating opportunities for all of us to build viable small businesses that tap into our creative potential, but only if we know how to develop our foresight and expand our zone of awareness.

Businesses large and small have to get to the point where they create their choices, not based on the economic conditions or what they wish to create economically, but on the awareness of, "How is this going to create a sustainable future."  The time to act is now! Business leaders have to be willing to function from the awareness of what will create the future they would like to have - not from the conclusion of what they've decided they want the future to be. People limit themselves with the conclusions they buy into.

The winners among businesses in coming decades will be those that recognise the evolution of their industry and their role within it. They will position themselves on more generative space in areas of the economy that will continue to create a sustainable future. They are willing to be the source for creating a different future by being the curiosity of possibilities and choice. - by asking "What about the future am I aware of that I haven't considered yet?".

In order to survive and thrive, businesses should consider the following:

  • What is the future that will be created 5, 10, 20 years from now by the choices you make today?
  • Which parts of the economy are transforming?
  • Which parts of the economy are contracting?
  • What business assumptions will become irrelevant?
  • What’s changed?
  • How could you take advantage of the change?

Perception of loss or gain can influence your decision

Before you set off in making an important decision, you need to take a moment to become aware of your points of view about the situation or the problem at hand. You also need to become aware of how these points of view may limit your choices. You will be a victim to your points of view if you are not aware of them.
